This is an annotated list of fifteen boxes of family correspondence owned by the Charles Edison Fund. The first ten boxes contain three-ring binders. Within each binder, the letters are enclosed in plastic sheets with one or several letters within each plastic sheet. Although each binder relates to a specific correspondent or theme, the letters are not arranged in any particular order within the binders. In the remaining five boxes, the documents are enclosed within large envelopes. Each box relates to a specific correspondent or theme, but the letters are not arranged in any order within the envelopes. Many of the letters bear pencil inscriptions at the bottom indicating that they were originally in the thirty-six correspondence books that appear on the 14-reel microfilm set. The letters without pencil inscriptions do not appear on the microfilm. Numerous letters, formerly in the correspondence books, were donated to the Thomas Edison National Historical Park in 1992.
For each correspondent, original letters and those selected from the microfilm appear in a single chronological sequence in the digital edition. With a few exceptions, the letters by Mina Edison and the six children of Thomas Edison have been completely selected for the period through 1931.
