Charles Hummel Collection, Wayne, N.J.: Edison Wartime Research Report No. 52: Taking Cargo Boats Out of Mined Harbors
[X128C52]

This collection consists primarily of letters exchanged between Edison and Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, along with related correspondence. Many of the typewritten letters are accompanied by drafts in Edison's hand. The one item in this folder is from February 11, 1918. It pertains to Edison's idea of using a steel cable attached to two submarine chasers to detect mines and other obstructions in coastal harbors and guide merchant ships safely to sea. Related material can be found in Report 55.

This project is described on pp. 170-171 of Lloyd N. Scott's Naval Consulting Board of the United States.
