[X400E]

[This collection is currently being edited. For that reason, no images will appear if the "List Documents" button at the bottom of the note is used.]

These thirty letters are from friends, acquaintances, and relatives congratulating John E. Sloane on his engagement to Madeleine Edison. The event was announced to friends and family at a dinner party at Glenmont on December 1, 1912. A formal announcement appeared in the New York Times and other newspapers two days later. The selected items include letters by Elmina Ambrose, Mrs. Anna S. Foster, and Frances Dean Halsey, mutual friends of John and Madeleine. Also selected are letters to John by various members of the Eyre and Grace families, including cousins Gladys Eyre, Joseph Peter Grace (son of shipping magnate W. R. Grace), and Margarita Grace Phipps; aunt Elisa Eyre; and uncles William S. Eyre and Michael P. Grace.
