Notebook Series -- Pocket Notebooks :: PN-13-01-04 (1912)

Description

The two dated entries in this pocket notebook are from December 1912 and January 1913. The book was used by Edison to record ideas about business matters, experiments to be tried, and other tasks to be performed. Many of the items have been crossed out. Included are notes relating to storage batteries and to battery applications such as automobile starters and miner's safety lamps. Also included are entries pertaining to improvements in the kinetophone, phonograph cabinet designs, and experiments with disc records. A series of irregularly numbered experiments, running in reverse order from 474 to 346, appears near the end of the book. The few business-related entries include notes about patents, patent applications, costs, and salaries. Also included is a two-page list of managerial and clerical staff and their salaries, which appears to be a variant version of the list at the end of PN-12-08-06.

Among the numerous Edison employees mentioned in the book are master machinist Robert A. Bachman; Harry R. Grimes of the Disc Record Manufacturing Dept.; Sherwood T. (Sam) Moore, one of Edison's principal assistants in the development of disc records; and Carl H. Wilson, vice president and general manager of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. The flyleaf is inscribed "Final Entry April 28, 1919." The pages are unnumbered. Approximately 160 pages have been used.
